The start of a new trade war between China and America

Despite the development of technological advances, shipping is still the backbone of the world economy for more than 5,000 years. Shipping is still the most reliable and efficient way to export and import goods. Also worth mentioning that port software holds a lot of valuable information, including which specific companies and countries are moving goods. The United Steelworkers union and other prominent organizations have united in a petition calling for government intervention to provide support for the U.S. shipbuilding industry. Citing concerns over alleged unfair trade practices by China, the petitioners are seeking government assistance in the form of benefits, funding, and regulatory measures to support domestic shipbuilding efforts.

The accusations against China include claims of market distortion and unfair competition in the maritime, logistics, and shipbuilding sectors. If the U.S. government upholds the petition, it is expected that punitive measures such as fines and increased port fees for Chinese-built ships will be implemented.

Furthermore, a dedicated budget is likely to be allocated to revitalize the shipbuilding industry in the United States, which has experienced a decline in global rankings over the past few decades.Today, America is only on the 19th place in the world, producing less than 1% of the world's ships. China, on the contrary, has been trying to strengthen its position since 2001 and has produced more than 1000 ships in the past year. In 2015, China recognized shipbuilding as a priority sector and plans to be the leading country in this sector by 2025. Now the shipbuilding industry in China is actively using political loans from state-owned banks, below market rate steel inputs, tax preferences and grants from export agencies.

The main intrigue remains behind the response of the Biden administration, because lately China and America have been actively trying to improve relations. If the petition is accepted, relations between the countries will be destabilized and this will create a new trade war between the countries.

Turkey stops trading with Israel

On Thursday, it was announced that Turkey has decided to halt trade with Israel as a form of protest against the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip. President Erdogan, however, has not yet issued an official statement regarding this trade cutoff. The Israeli government believes that Erdogan is violating international trade agreements as well as ignoring the interests of the Turkish people and companies.

Statistics show that the trade turnover between Turkey and Israel in 2023 amounted to approximately 6.8 billion dollars. The strained relations between the two countries have escalated during Israel's military operations in Gaza, and just days ago, and just a couple of days ago, Turkey decided to act as a plaintiff in a United Nations court case accusing Israel of genocide. President Erdogan has been a strong supporter of Hamas, evidenced by his meetings with key Hamas political figures, such as Ismail Haniyeh, earlier this year. While many countries are reconsidering their relations with Israel, major partners like the United States and the United Kingdom are still actively backing Israel. The motive behind Erdogan's decision to sever trade relations remains unclear at this time.

Just a month ago, local elections were held in Turkey, where Erdogan’s party significantly lost support and authority, losing to the country’s main opposition party. Erdogan actively took advantage of the situation with Israel on the eve of the elections; at his instigation, rallies in support of Palestine were repeatedly held in the country. He aggressively condemned Israel's actions. However, voters deemed his support for Palestine insufficient as trade with Israel persisted. It appears that Erdogan's decision to halt trade with Israel may be an attempt to regain support from voters and reaffirm his position of strength.

New EV rules

On Friday, the U.S. government relaxed some rules that affect regulatory tax credits for electric vehicles. The modified rules will allow more electric cars to qualify for the credit. The credits will range from $3,750 to $7,500 for new electric cars, and about $4,000 for used cars.

Various factors, including income levels and vehicle value, will impact the eligibility for the tax credit. A critical condition for the credit is that the electric vehicle must be manufactured in North America.

This decision is expected to spur greater demand for electric cars, aligning with the Biden administration's ambitious objective of achieving electric vehicles accounting for 50% of all new car sales by 2030. Furthermore, the government has revealed plans to gradually strengthen regulations to bolster the development of the domestic electric vehicle supply chain. Notably, the new regulations will restrict buyers from receiving the full tax break if they purchase electric vehicles with batteries sourced from countries deemed unfriendly, such as China, North Korea, Iran, and Russia.

While these measures have received a mixed reaction from the public, with some criticizing the government's policy approach, statistics indicate a slowdown in demand for electric cars, dropping to 3.3% this year from 7.8% in the previous year. Despite the introduced incentives, challenges remain in accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles, underscoring the ongoing complexities in the transition to sustainable transportation options.

Tesla from India

Ilon Musk has sued Indian company Tesla Power, accusing them of illegally using his trademark.Musk alleges that Tesla Power has been unlawfully using his company's trademarks, including "Tesla Power" and "Tesla Power USA," in their advertising efforts. Despite repeated demands from Musk's team in 2022 to cease unauthorized usage, Tesla Power continued to market their products with the infringing trademarks, prompting Musk to file a lawsuit.

Located in Gurgaon, India, Tesla Power is a prominent manufacturer of lead-acid batteries. As the legal proceedings unfold, a representative of Tesla Power has stated that their company has a longstanding presence in the market and possesses all requisite documentation and government approvals for their operations. The Indian company maintains that it has no connection to Musk's Tesla and has no intentions of venturing into the electric vehicle market. Within three weeks, representatives of the Indian side must provide the court with all documents and permissions to use the trademark. During the trial, the Indian company must temporarily stop using the Mask trademark to label its products on the website.

The legal dispute has coincided with reports of Musk's decision to scrap plans for an electric car production plant and cancel a scheduled meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 21. The next court hearing on the case will be held on May 22

Loud corruption scandal

On Wednesday, a significant scandal unfolded in Russia with the indictment of Deputy Defense Minister Timur Ivanov on corruption charges. Ivanov is accused of accepting a bribe of 1 million rubles, equivalent to around $10,800. He appeared in court in his military uniform to face the charges, alongside two other individuals involved in the corruption case: Alexander Fomin, the owner of a construction company, and businessman Sergei Borodin. All three will remain in custody while further investigations are conducted.

Ivanov had served as deputy defense minister since 2016. Ivanov's key responsibility was to restore Mariupol after the military operations. However, his lavish lifestyle, including luxury properties in Moscow and extravagant vacations, has drawn criticism from the public. Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Ivanov was even placed on the sanctions list. As of now, Russian officials have refrained from making any statements regarding Ivanov's case. Some independent media outlets speculate that treason charges may be linked to his arrest. Ivanov's legal representation is actively pursuing house arrest on his behalf. If found guilty of corruption, Ivanov could face a lengthy prison sentence of up to 15 years.
