First vessel after the accident

The first cargo ship passed through Baltimore on Thursday after a bridge collapse. The Balsa 94 passed through the 35-foot channel heading for St. John, Canada. The dry cargo ship coursed through the canal with the help of two tugboats following in front and behind the vessel. It passed a fallen bridge and the grounded container ship Dali.

Due to the accident that occurred 4 weeks ago the movement of cargo ships through the canal was completely suspended. The port of Baltimore is one of the main ports, so the authorities immediately began to take decisive action. The government opened a temporary channel for commercial ships to avoid severe economic damages.

Oceanside's famous pier is on fire

A massive fire broke out at the famous pier on Thursday. The fire was reported at about 3 o'clock. The footage shows that the sky was completely covered with smoke, the pier structure was severely destroyed and the attracting restaurants were burned.

Firefighters were unable to bring the fire under control for a long time. Two fireboats, a helicopter and several fire engines, three vessels tried to stop the fire. Visibility was poor due to heavy smoke. The strong surf that day also created additional problems in extinguishing the fire. Despite requests from firefighters and police, many people began to gather near the coast to watch the fire.

We took this video from CBS 8 San Diego YouTube Channel.

Initially firefighters had been trying to save restaurants and cafes located on the pier, but later it was decided to change tactics and try to save the rest of the pier.By 5 o'clock a helicopter appeared to dump water, this tactic is used quite rarely, only in the most serious cases. By this time, the roofs of the restaurants had already been completely consumed by the fire. Because of the strong wind, the fire spread very quickly to other buildings. Closer to 6pm, the fire chief engaged a helicopter, which is usually used for forest fires. The capacity of such a helicopter is approximately 2500 gallons of water at a time. Close to 11 p.m., firefighters managed to put out the fire. But firefighters remained on duty throughout the night in case of a hidden fire.

Investigators are still working at the scene to understand the true cause of the fire. It will take several days to determine the cause and a rough estimate of the damage.
